Chapter Eleven

After a call with Jay’s father in New York and another to their banker the next morning, Hamra stood over the silent fax machine in the king’s temporary office downstairs in Azari’s house that was still in shadows from the early morning sun rising in the east. Finally, the irritating ring followed by the whirr of the printer came to life with something they were all eager to receive in their attempt to follow Rhys’s money trail.

“It’s a bank transfer going to Ali’s Marine Repair from Prince Rasha’s personal account.” Baraz ripped the paper from the machine and read the message to his father, Jay, and Nico.

Hamra knew Ali, and he was first to declare his intent to investigate.

Leaving Baraz, Nico, and Jay, he went to straight to the familiar shack on the furthest dock in the Safina harbor. The decades old coiled heaps of white rope, discarded anchors, a broken captain’s wheel and other nautical relics were strewn around the building and elicited a nostalgic grin from Hamra. The place hadn’t changed in forty years.

Dressed in his uniform to look official and intimidating to the old fisherman, he shoved some fish netting aside and ducked freshly painted buoys hanging from the ceiling to dry. The front desk was vacant, so he moved past it into an office. A table fan hummed in a corner and fluttered papers on the desk. The salty smell of the sea, musty and thick from the heat of the stuffy office, brought back fond memories of his younger years working on the docks with his father. Hamra stiffened when he looked at the chair behind the desk, surprised by a Glock pistol aimed at him, held still in Rhys’s extended arm.

Hamra slowly nodded in recognition of his former protégé in the Safinan ranks and was not at all surprised by the glowing green eyes fixed on him with the gun pointed straight at his heart. “We’ve been looking for you, Your Highness.” He took out a cigarette, lit it, and dragged off of it slowly, appearing unaffected by the gun.

“Have you?” Rhys raised an eyebrow.

Hamra understood the look in Rhys’s eyes. He learned through training Rhys that he was unstable and prone to bouts of rage, but now Hamra knew he was dealing with a true sociopath. The attack on the Salas compound had awoken a monster, one that was probably always inside him.

When the young prince begged Hamra to join the military, Rhys was a model soldier, and there were no signs of his later rages. After months of intense training with weapons and explosives, Rhys became volatile, causing rifts in the ranks and disrespecting his superiors. The general had to ask the king to make him leave.

“So, you’re the Snake, eh?” Hamra casually quipped, taking a puff of his cigarette. “The chosen one to settle the score with The Phoenix? Prince Rasha will avenge the Salas family, and everyone will remember your name?”

Hamra took a long tug on his cigarette and spoke steadily through his exhale.
